Learning from Animals in Scripture – The Serpent and the Dove

Matthew 10:16

“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”

Reflection:

There are so many animals to learn from in this one short verse! Let us focus only on the serpent and the dove.

We have already considered some of the crafty ways of the serpent. While the serpent is the form and image of Satan, the animal is used here to highlight wit and craftiness that can be used in a godly manner. You need not and should not be as the lemming, following others off cliffs mindlessly to your own demise. Look around you. See the dangers of the world so that you might not thoughtlessly wander into traps and temptation. Do you see a habit in your life where, if you go to that place then you will almost certainly commit that sin? Be wise. Use your wit for the glory of God.

But learn also from the dove, that image of the very Holy Spirit of God at the baptism of Jesus. The white dove is a symbol of purity and innocence. Do not just try to appear pure and innocent. Jesus Christ has died for your sins. For His glory and in the power of the Holy Spirit, be pure and innocent! Your goal in life today should not just be to crush all of your opponents like a giant stomping through the land. Be like the dove for the glory of God, alighting upon the world in such a way that the world is pleased to see you.

In Christ,
