Can Christians Stop Sinning? Yes!

Hebrews 10:14

“For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”

Reflection:

Christian, this short reflection on the Word of God is for your encouragement! There is a harmful idea that sometimes floats around Christian circles that robs you of joy and it goes something like this: “I don’t want to be arrogant, and I know I am not perfect, therefore, everything that I do is sinful.” Oftentimes, the Isaiah 64:6 “filthy rags” verse is used incorrectly to prove the point even though that verse is about people who do not follow God. Here is the problem with that line of thinking: Christians don’t sin! That is not the thing that Christians do! The Christian is the person who has a changed nature. The Christian has been given a new heart that desires to and is able to glorify God! The Christian is filled with the Holy Spirit who is able to overcome every sin! God sanctifies the Christian. You are not left completely dead in your sin. God causes you, in this life, to grow in righteousness. You are free! The shackles have fallen off! You are bound no more! Do not fret yourself with questions like, “Can I stop sinning for the rest of my life, even if I live another 100 years?” Christian, you have been justified by grace through faith in Christ. As our verse says, you have already been perfected. You will not lose your justification. But rejoice today that now, through the Holy Spirit, God causes you to grow in sanctification! Although you still wrestle with that old, sinful nature, it is not your master. God does not leave you bound to sin. He frees you and even strengthens you to overcome temptation for His glory! Rejoice today that God gives you His strength! You need not go about trying to count your good works. Just rejoice, knowing that God with you is making you more like His wonderful Son, as He says, “By a single offering her has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”
